Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Nicolas moved to Vancouver Island in 2009 and is thrilled to call it home with his wife, Carly. She and their three kids are Nicolas’ main passions. They are both grateful to be able to raise them on Vancouver Island and all of the opportunities it has to offer, while balancing work, life, and outdoor adventure!

Nicolas is enthusiastic about Campbell River and building relationships with the people he meets. He completed his formal education earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Calgary and his Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria. He hails from a long-standing fifteen year career in education where he has been a mentor and coach to many. After completing his master’s degree in Leadership in 2014 from Vancouver Island University, Nicolas committed to using his skills to innovate education. He went on to create an award winning program called Carihi Fly Fishing, where he committed years of fundraising to pay for equipment needed to teach students how to fly fish. He combined teaching English, conservation, and fly fishing, where students earned full academic credits towards their graduation. It continues to be a success and a hallmark of innovation in education, which is still embraced by many in the community who contribute via donations and an annual memorial award. Further, the City of Campbell River requested he bring to life fly fishing in the city. He works as a community instructor, introducing those interested in the sport with evening classes.

When he’s not spending time with his family or working, you can likely find him wading in rivers across Vancouver Island fishing for pacific salmon and trout, or connecting with friends and family. Nicolas lives for the outdoors, and also invests himself in the pursuit of blacktail and mule deer.

A staunch conservationist, Nicolas volunteers his time both leading and encouraging youth to participate in acts of stewardship within the community. He participates in local events including, subsurface clean up with the Tyee Club of BC, salmon enhancement with Greenways Landtrust, assisting the Oyster River Salmon Enhancement Society with fish feeding and releases, and raising coho salmon from egg to fry with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
